MINIart: Obey’s Street Art at the CVA

The street art culture has become increasingly popular throughout Denver this year, and Schomp MINI can’t get enough of it. What was once thought of as graffiti or obstruction of property is now a culture all in its own world. But street art isn’t just graffiti, either. From painted murals to incorporating scrap metal or other raw materials, street art has given lovers of the arts to experience its culture outside of museums and galleries.

Schomp MINI loves street art so much, that we drive a MINI around the city to look for it. Whether it’s in an alley or it hugs the whole city, we keep finding walls of art that we love. Most recently, we ran into this wall:

Shepard Fairey, of Obey Giant fame, is the artist who created this wall art. He came to Denver for a gallery show at yhe BlackBook Gallery this year, but left Denver with something that is one of our favorite street works of art yet. Fairey said that he loves street art because it takes on the texture of the surrounding areas of that location and the wall itself.

Fairey is the creator of Obey Clothing, known for its fame because the inspiration for it was street art. He first created a sticker in 1989 at the Rhode Island School of Design and has now evolved into a world-known street art campaign.

“The OBEY GIANT campaign is rooted in the DIY counterculture of punk rock and skateboarding, but it has also taken cues from popular culture, commercial marketing and political messaging. Fairey steeps his ideology and iconography in the self- empowerment of those who refuse to be manipulated by the machine of manufactured consent. With biting sarcasm verging on reverse psychology, he goads viewers, using the imperative “obey,” to take heed of the propagandists out to bend the world to their agendas.” -OBEY

The Obey Clothing collection features men’s and women’s designs. From hats to tees and even dresses and skirts for women, Obey has become one of those most branded companies out there. To see Obey’s collections, click HERE
